JODO GYAN– MATHS WITH MANIPULATIVES
Maths workshop on ‘Mathematical Tools for Meaningful Pedagogical Practices’ organised by Jodo Gyan The objective of the workshop was to change abstract mathematical learning to concrete learning. As the children learn better with what they touch, feel and observe, hands on experience was emphasized upon. Illuminating pedagogical ways to teach Mathematics at the Primary level were the resource team using Jodo Gyanmaterial Beads, Ragnometry, Blocks, Dice etc. The teachers were encouraged to use various new ways to teach Math like juggling of numbers for addition and subtraction using fractions kit , digit cards game, beads for counting, half and skip counting, games for multiplication, taming the table, jodo straws game for 2 D and 3 D geometry, decimals and many more.
The workshop was not only educative but thought provoking. It provided the teachers an insight into innovative teaching methodologies and led them to introspect and adopt the new and better ways to reach out to the children. They were asked to adopt methods to teach the students in ways that not only enhance their learning but enable them to retain the concepts forever. The traditional way of rote learning was advised to be replaced by teaching by experimenting, to suit the changing times and abide by the need of the hour.
